  • Extrinsic Sensors: The fiber serves only as a light conduit. The sensing occurs outside the fiber via an external transducer, and the fiber transmits the modulated light to the detector .
  • Hybrid Sensors: Combine intrinsic and extrinsic principles, where the fiber both carries light and participates in sensing, while external transducers may also modulate the light .

Light Propagation and Modulation

The optical fiber typically consists of a core and cladding with different refractive indices. Light travels through the core by total internal reflection, maintaining signal integrity over long distances. When the physical quantity interacts with the fiber or transducer, it modulates the light's properties, which can be detected as changes in intensity, phase, wavelength, or polarization .
