Article Overview
Proper installation of a movable door panel ensures safety, accessibility, and compliance with electrical standards while concealing the distribution box.
Key Considerations
Safety and Compliance: The access door protects users from accidental contact with live components and must comply with standards such as NEC section 408.8, which requires all unused openings in a panelboard to be closed and the interior protected from foreign objects . The door also helps contain arc flash events and electrical fires. Material and Mounting: Doors are typically made of galvanized steel for fire resistance or lighter materials like paintable plastic for aesthetic purposes . They can be flush-mounted to sit level with the wall or surface-mounted to protrude slightly . The door must be securely hinged or latched to prevent inadvertent opening.
Installation Steps
- Measure and Prepare: Accurately measure the rough opening of the wall surrounding the distribution box. Ensure the box is installed at an accessible height (typically ~1.5m) and in a dry, ventilated area .
- Attach Hinges or Back Box: For concealed electrical power transfer units (CEPT), mount the back box directly to the door and frame using the appropriate screws: 10-24 x 3/4” for metal or #10 x 3/4” for wood . Ensure the unit is aligned along the hinged edge and fully concealed when closed.
- Wire Connections: If the door includes a CEPT or similar power/data transfer unit, connect the wires using wire nuts for 18 AWG wires and Dolphin™ crimp connectors for 22 AWG wires . Fold the hinged retainer over the cable and insert it through the frame flange to secure the connection.
- Install the Door Panel: Position the door on the hinges, ensuring smooth movement and proper alignment with the wall. Check that the door closes flush with the surrounding surface if flush-mounted.
- Secure and Test: Tighten all screws and verify that the door latches securely. Perform a visual inspection and, if applicable, use a multimeter to confirm proper electrical connections before powering the system .
- Labeling and Maintenance: Clearly label the panel and maintain records of installation. Schedule periodic inspections to ensure long-term reliability and safety .
Tools Recommended
- #2 Phillips screwdriver
- Pliers for retainer folding
- Drill (for un-prepped doors)
- Wire strippers and crimping tools for connectors By following these steps, the movable door panel will provide safe, compliant, and aesthetically concealed access to the electrical distribution box while allowing for future maintenance and upgrades.
