Article Overview
Fiber optic displacement sensors measure the position, movement, or vibration of a target by detecting changes in light intensity reflected or transmitted through an optical fiber.
Working Principle
Fiber optic displacement sensors operate by transmitting light through an optical fiber to a target surface and receiving the reflected or transmitted light via a receiving fiber. The amount of light received changes with the distance between the probe and the target, allowing the sensor to convert these variations into an electrical signal proportional to displacement, position, or vibration amplitude . Two common techniques are used:
- Intensity Modulation: The simplest method, where the sensor measures changes in light intensity caused by axial or lateral movement of the target relative to the fiber probe. A silicon photodiode detects the light, and the output voltage correlates with displacement .
- Interferometry: A more sensitive method that uses interference patterns of light to detect extremely small displacements, often in the nanometer range .
Sensor Types
- Intrinsic Sensors: The fiber itself acts as the sensing element, with the measurand directly affecting the light traveling through the fiber .
- Extrinsic Sensors: The fiber transmits light to and from an external sensing element, which modulates the light based on displacement or other physical changes .
- Hybrid Sensors: Combine intrinsic and extrinsic principles for enhanced measurement capabilities .
Applications
Fiber optic displacement sensors are widely used in:
- Precision engineering: Measuring micro-displacements in machinery or components.
- Vibration analysis: Detecting amplitude, frequency, and waveform of vibrating surfaces .
- Surface condition monitoring: Evaluating roughness or alignment of materials.
- Harsh environments: Situations with high voltage, electromagnetic interference, or flammable materials, where conventional sensors are unsuitable .
Advantages
- Non-contact measurement: Reduces wear and avoids mechanical interference.
- High sensitivity and resolution: Capable of detecting displacements in the nanometer range .
- Immunity to electromagnetic interference: Suitable for electrically noisy environments .
- Remote sensing capability: Can measure displacement in inaccessible or hazardous locations . In summary, fiber optic displacement sensors function by converting variations in light intensity, phase, or interference into precise electrical signals, enabling accurate measurement of position, displacement, and vibration in a wide range of industrial and scientific applications .
