Article Overview
A cut fiber optic cable can be repaired by locating the break, removing the damaged section, preparing the fiber ends, splicing them, and testing the connection for reliability.
Step 1: Locate the Damage
Use a visual inspection to identify obvious cuts, kinks, or damaged jackets. For less visible faults, an Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) can pinpoint internal breaks by analyzing reflected light signals, ensuring accurate fault location and avoiding unnecessary cutting .
Step 2: Remove the Damaged Section
Cut out the damaged portion using a fiber optic cutter or Kevlar shears, creating clean working edges. Ensure enough fiber length remains for proper stripping, cleaving, and splicing .
Step 3: Strip the Cable
Use a fiber optic stripper to remove the outer jacket and expose the internal fibers. Cut any aramid (Kevlar) fibers carefully with a Kevlar cutter, avoiding scratches or nicks to the fiber core . Slide the connector boot onto the fiber before splicing if using connectors.
Step 4: Cleave and Clean the Fiber Ends
Use a precision fiber cleaver to cut the fiber ends at a precise 90-degree angle. Clean the fiber ends with alcohol wipes and lint-free cloths to remove any impurities, ensuring a smooth, flat end-face for low-loss splicing .
Step 5: Splice the Fibers
Depending on the tools available, you can perform:
- Fusion splicing: Align and fuse the fiber ends using a fusion splicer for a permanent, low-loss connection.
- Mechanical splicing: Use an inline connector to join the fibers if fusion splicing is not available .
Step 6: Secure and Protect the Connection
After splicing, slide the connector boot or protective cover into place. Ensure the splice is stable and protected from environmental damage .
Step 7: Test the Repair
Use a visual fault locator or a fiber optic meter to verify that the fibers are properly aligned and the connection is transmitting light efficiently. Testing ensures the repair is reliable and meets performance standards .
Tools Required
- Fiber optic cutter and stripper
- Kevlar shears
- Precision fiber cleaver
- Fusion splicer or mechanical splice kit
- Alcohol wipes and lint-free cloths
- OTDR or visual fault locator By following these steps carefully, a cut fiber optic cable can be restored to full functionality with minimal signal loss and long-term reliability .
