- Fiber: 1 km × 0.35 dB/km = 0.35 dB
- Connectors: 6 × 0.3 dB = 1.8 dB
- Splice: 0.15 dB
- Total estimated loss: 0.35 + 1.8 + 0.15 = 2.3 dB This total can then be compared to the power budget of the transmitter and receiver to ensure proper operation .

- Connector loss can vary slightly due to installation quality, connector type, and mating conditions, so measured loss may differ from the estimate.
- For certification or troubleshooting, use an optical power meter and light source or an OLTS to measure actual insertion loss and compare it to the calculated budget .
