Article Overview

Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) are detected primarily by monitoring shifts in their reflected Bragg wavelength, using techniques such as wavelength interrogation, edge filter detection, and power-based methods.

Wavelength Interrogation

The most common detection method for FBGs involves tracking the Bragg wavelength shift, which occurs when the fiber experiences strain, temperature changes, or other perturbations. This can be achieved using:

  • Optical spectrum analyzers (OSA): High-resolution devices that measure the reflected spectrum of the FBG, allowing precise determination of wavelength shifts.
  • Tunable laser sources: The laser wavelength is scanned across the FBG reflection band, and the reflected intensity is recorded to detect the Bragg wavelength.
  • Arrayed waveguide gratings (AWG) or demultiplexers: These devices separate reflected wavelengths for simultaneous monitoring of multiple FBGs in wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) systems .

Edge Filter Detection

Edge filter detection converts wavelength shifts into intensity changes by passing the FBG reflection through a filter with a steep transmission slope. Small shifts in the Bragg wavelength result in measurable intensity variations, which can be detected with photodiodes. This method is particularly useful for high-speed or dynamic sensing, such as acoustic emission detection, where rapid changes need to be captured .

Power Interrogation and Exceptional Points

Advanced FBG detection can exploit power interrogation schemes, especially in FBGs engineered near exceptional points (EPs). In this approach, the reflection spectrum is tuned so that small environmental perturbations produce large changes in reflected power, significantly enhancing sensitivity for temperature and strain measurements. This method allows simultaneous multi-parameter sensing by using a sensitivity matrix to decouple cross-sensitivities .

Other Techniques

  • Interferometric methods: FBGs can be incorporated into interferometers, where phase changes due to wavelength shifts are converted into intensity variations.
  • Photonic crystal fiber FBGs and functional coatings: These enhance sensitivity and allow detection in harsh environments or for specialized applications like biomedical sensing .

Summary

FBG detection methods are chosen based on required sensitivity, speed, and application environment. Wavelength interrogation provides high accuracy, edge filter detection enables fast dynamic measurements, and power interrogation near exceptional points offers extreme sensitivity for multi-parameter sensing. Advances in laser inscription, coatings, and fiber types continue to expand the versatility and performance of FBG detection systems .
