The absence of escaping bubbles confirms that the box maintains its waterproof integrity even after multiple resealing cycles .
Immersion Test
For higher waterproof standards, the immersion test is conducted by submerging the sealed junction box in water at a depth of 1.5 meters for 24 hours. This ensures that water does not penetrate the enclosure, protecting internal fiber optic components from damage .
Ingress Protection (IP) Testing
IP testing evaluates both dust and water resistance:
- Dust-tight test (IP6X): The enclosure is exposed to a controlled dusty environment to confirm that no dust particles enter and contaminate internal components.
- Waterproof tests:
- IP65 (splash test): Water jets are sprayed at different angles to simulate rain or cleaning scenarios, ensuring the box resists water intrusion.
- IP68 (immersion test): The box is submerged in water for a specified duration and depth to verify long-term waterproof performance .
Sealing Mechanisms
Waterproof junction boxes rely on O-rings, gaskets, compression surfaces, and threaded or bayonet-style couplings to maintain a reliable seal. Proper assembly, torque control, and material stability are critical, as O-rings can degrade over time due to temperature cycling, UV exposure, or chemical aging, potentially compromising the waterproof integrity .

- Field conditions, including repeated mating cycles, vibration, and thermal expansion, can affect long-term waterproof performance.
