Protective Coatings

Bare glass fibers are fragile, so they are immediately coated with UV-cured acrylate polymers. Typically, a soft inner layer cushions the fiber, while a harder outer layer provides mechanical protection. For extreme environments, coatings like polyimide or silicone are used to withstand high temperatures, chemical exposure, or mechanical stress .

Manufacturing Process

  1. Preform Creation: Ultra-pure silica and dopants are deposited in layers inside a hollow tube or on a solid rod using methods like Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition (MCVD). The resulting preform is a large-scale version of the fiber with the same core-cladding structure .
  2. Fiber Drawing: The preform is heated to around 2,000°C in a drawing tower, and a thin strand of glass is pulled downward, forming a fiber about 125 microns in diameter .
  3. Coating Application: The fiber is coated with protective polymers immediately after drawing to prevent micro-cracks and environmental damage .
  4. Cable Assembly: Multiple fibers are bundled, often with strength members like aramid yarn or fiberglass rods, and encased in an outer jacket of polyethylene, PVC, or LSZH materials. For undersea cables, additional steel or copper layers may be added .
